The story begins eight years ago when Albert M. Devaul, then a prosperous lumberman of Myrtle Point, disappeared. A victim of amnesia, he wanderin lumber camps or watered up and down the coast, working front, believing he was a fugitive from police.
His wife divorced him, had the courts decree he was dead, and married H. A. Sheff of Long Beach. Last night Devaul reappeared with a cousin who found him working in a mining camp under the name of "Bert King." Man and wife met in an attorney's office. Mrs.
Sheff forced back the tears. "I thought you were dead." Devaul replied: "You do look vaguely familiar." Devaul was not sure today but what he would show the same selfsacrifice as did Enoch Arden, who walked out of the lives of his wife and her new husband. (P) -An increase of dollar sales in Texas department stores and special shops during September was reported today by bureau of business research of the University of Texas. "Reports from 94 representative establishments show that total sales were 31 per cent greater than during the month of September, 1933, and 45 per cent above those of August this year, or almost double the usual seasonal increase from August to September," the bureau reported.
"The group making the best showing in comparisons with September last year was men's clothing stores whose sales increased 48 per cent. Increases for the remaining groups were: "Women's specialty shops 40 per cent: dry goods and apparel stores 36 per cent; small department' stores 82 per cent, and large departstores, 27 per cent. in which the percentage increase in aggregate sales during September months as well the as for the first of year exceeded the average increase over the corresponding periods last year, were: "Abilene, Beaumont, EI Paso, Houston, Lubbock, Port Arthur and Tyler. "The group of stores located mainly in the smaller cities again made a favorable showing with the periods compared. This same fact has been noted in previous months and has been interpreted to mean that purchasing power in the rural districts is apparently increasing relatively faster than in the distinctly urban centers."
